RE: Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

(snip)
Sorry Harry, I am asking for anyone in Oregon that is for the idea
to step forward. Not really looking for those opposed in Ca.
LOL, sounds like you have a bunch of flat earth folks up there.
In OK we have double towed long time before the term RV started being used. Double towing with a 5er has been popular since the early '70s when the first 5ers started showing up at campgrounds. In '05 the state made ball to ball double towing legal. We have lots of big COE lakes, mostly eastern OK, and we also have lots of tripple towing with the summer lake traffic. Zero problems.
Good luck on your Op and maybe certain posters won't hijack or get your thread closed.
Jim
Thanks for encouragement Jim. Its amazing how some of the folks don't
want to try something else but they don't want you to try it either.
I am always amazed how they come out of the woodwork any time a triple tow is mentioned. Luckily for me the handful I heard back
from on this forum will have no influence if we decide to pursue.

RE: Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

I'm already "overloaded".........
no thanks.
would not be required, but if you had a 5th wheel and wanted to take your fishing boat or jet ski or motorcycle or ??? it would be legal
as it is in many states now.
It would mirror Ca. law that has been on the books for years.

RE: Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

Sorry, cannot support your idea. There are way too many secondary and rural roads in Oregon that IMHO could pose problems for towing doubles. Besides, if mirroring California's laws includes making us get a RV endorsement I am definitely against the idea.
Again, I am not interested in those opposed to idea, I am looking
for support. If this idea gets to Salem you can join with others
of the same mind and oppose it. Right now just looking for support.
Thank you

RE: Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

I have lived in Redding California for 43 years and I go boating and fishing all summer and half the winter and I have NEVER seen a truck pulling a 5th wheel and a boat...seems to me like NOT very many people are doing it here.
I also don't think with all the mountains we have here in the North State and in Oregon, it would be very safe.
I'm against it.

RE: Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

Can you provide more details on what Cal is doing?
I'm not familiar with it.
California has a law on the books that allows a small trailer to be pulled behind a 5th wheel

Oregon..support for pulling trailer behind 5th wheel

I have state rep Hanna willing to take this idea forward to a new law
that would mirror California law. I need as many supporters as possible. You would need to be able and willing to go to Salem when
the time comes to support the bill.
Is there interest out there ?? If you have a business or work for a
business that would benefit, thats good as well.

RE: receiver hitch for 5th wheel

I took mine to a good welding shop to see if they could fab one up.
$250 later I was on my way. Can't use it here in Oregon as I wanted
but that could change. Still good for bicycle rack.

RE: Type of 5th wheel hitch

From what I've seen/read, stay away from the Reese/Drawtite brand/style. I have a Husky & couldn't be happier w/it.
Lets see...I am a salesman and can sell this guy a good $400 hitch
or a good $600 hitch...why not bad mouth the $400 dollar and push
the $600 hitch...wow that was easy...works every time

RE: 5th Airborne install by myself?

Moving the airbag to the front or rear does not change your pinweight.
Pinweight stays the same. Moving airbag changes the point of leverage.
With a 2,800 lb pinweight you will want most leverage possible or close to it. My pinweight is close to that and I have airbag in second
setting from the rear and run 90 lbs air. Follow directions when airing it up and stop airing when you reach the line on the shock.
As far as installing yourself, I have read of guys installing it there
self but I didnt try. I paid a shop $100 to do it.
You will probably have to go up one set of holes on hitch from where
it was before or trailer may be nose high.

RE: Fifth Airborne and Fifth Wheel Leveling Issue

The Fifth Airborne instructions states to install in the original holes, so I followed the instructions. I can go up one more set of holes but the original bolt placement would be different so I would not be using the original holes. It appears to be higher about 2 inches or so
I had to go up with the pin box one set of holes and down with the hitch one set of holes.

RE: Semi's passing

I travel 40 daily in Ark an Ok. In Ark there speed limit is 65 where autos are 70. I have followed side by side rigs for miles. They do this on purpose as there trying to get the speed limit for them up. Also same in Ok at 70 and when the finally clear there up to 75 like me. They will pull in front of you making you brake then after they clear there is at least a truck length before they move over. I owned one back in the sixty's an drivers were very courteous but know there a joke. Anyone can go to driving school and 1 week later they pass there test then there the king of the road. Fuel is not a issue cause they were doing it before the fuel went up. Unless you are a Union driver the money is not that good so this tells me the quality of people that are driving them cause most of them are uneducated bums. My 2 penny's and I ain't moving over for them if the road is rough in the right lane. Be my luck Ill get a ticket for blocking traffic.
I agree 100%...I had my own truck years ago. Its a whole different
breed of cat out there anymore. If you doubt it, hang around a truck
stop for a while. The industry went down with deregulation.

RE: Fifth Airborne King Pin Box-Do You Like It?

Has anyone had any frame warantee problems on the frame from adding a 5th Airborne kin pin.
Why would there be frame issues ???? 5th Airborne( or any air hitch)softens any jolts to the frame.

RE: Slide out issues

Do you have at least one good 12 volt battery (2 would be better)
I try to move slides while I am still hooked to shore power or
with the truck plugged to trailer and the motor running to get all
voltage possible to slide motor.

RE: Dually clearance with 5th wheel

Most people have the hitch installed by a shop. It would be very difficult to make the fender of the truck hit the trailer.
Pay the dealer that you buy from to install the hitch. He will
make sure its done right and that there is clearance between the
bed and the trailer. Usually six inches clearance is fine.

RE: The design of Trail Air v. 5th Airborne

Not sure about the engineering differences between the pinboxes but
the 5th Airborne seems to work well. I haven't had a Trail Air but
have heard it is difficult to get hooked up to your truck.
